Act Scores

There is a particular kind of silence that descends upon a room when an envelope bearing an ACT score report is torn open. It is not the silence of anticipation, but rather the hollow quiet of a verdict being read aloud in a courtroom where the defendant has already lost. For decades, this standardised examination has served as a grim arbiter of academic worth, reducing the complexities of young minds into sterile numbers ranging from one to thirty-six. The entire enterprise feels less like an educational assessment and more like a bureaucratic ritual designed to sort the hopeful from the hopeless. Students spend months grinding through practice papers under flickering fluorescent lights, sacrificing their youth to memorise formulae and grammatical rules that feel entirely divorced from the chaotic reality of existence. When the scores finally arrive, they rarely bring salvation; instead, they confirm what many have feared all alongâthat the system was never built to nurture, but merely to rank and discard.
The Withering Nature of Standardised Expectations
Much like a flower forced to bloom in barren soil, students are expected to produce vibrant intellectual results in environments that offer little sustenance. The ACT does not measure potential; it measures endurance. It tests how well a person can sit motionless for hours, filling in bubbles with a number two pencil while the clock ticks away like a metronome counting down to an inevitable disappointment. Those who score highly are often those who have had the privilege of expensive tutors and endless preparation courses, whilst those who fall short are left to carry the weight of a number that will follow them into university admissions offices and beyond. The illusion of meritocracy crumbles when one examines the bleak correlation between socioeconomic status and test performance. We celebrate the outliers, the rare individuals who defy the odds, but we conveniently ignore the thousands who are quietly crushed beneath the machinery of standardised testing. The sunflower, often a symbol of relentless optimism, becomes something else entirely in this contextâa reminder that even things meant to reach toward the light are eventually cut down and left to rot.
A Hollow Harvest of Academic Validation
What remains after the scores are submitted and the university decisions are made? A lingering sense of futility. The ACT reduces the rich tapestry of human thought into multiple-choice options, demanding that students select the single correct answer in a world that rarely offers such simplicity. This rigid framework leaves no room for nuance, creativity, or the kind of divergent thinking that actually drives progress. Instead, it rewards conformity and rote memorisation, producing graduates who are excellent at following instructions but ill-equipped to navigate the shadows of an unpredictable future. The templates we use to prepare for these examsâendless worksheets and practice gridsâare the architectural blueprints of our own intellectual confinement. We build walls around our children's minds and then test them on how well they can navigate the maze we constructed. In the end, the ACT score is nothing more than a monument to a broken paradigm, a numerical ghost haunting the corridors of secondary education, reminding us daily that we value metrics over meaning and data over humanity.
