I still remember the exact moment I first typed a cheat code into GTA Vice City. I was sat cross-legged on the carpet in front of a chunky CRT telly, controller in hand, and a friend had scribbled a list of codes on a piece of paper torn from his school exercise book. That little scrap of paper changed everything. Suddenly, the sun-soaked, neon-drenched streets of 1986 Vice City were mine to bend and break however I pleased. PROFESSIONALISTOOLS and NUTTERTOOLS escalate things dramatically, blessing you with an RPG, a minigun and enough firepower to level an entire city block. I spent countless hours unleashing chaos with those codes, then panicking the moment my wanted level shot up to six stars.
And speaking of wanted levels, CHASESTAT was my saviour more times than I care to admit. When the Vice City Police Department had me cornered outside the Malibu Club, LEAVEMEALONE wiped the slate clean and let me stroll away as if nothing had happened. On the flip side, if I fancied a proper war, YOUWONTTAKEMEALIVE cranked the heat up instantly. Then there was ASPIRINE for a full health top-up and PRECIOUSPROTECTION for armour, the two codes I probably typed more than any others combined.
Of course, no conversation about Vice City cheats is complete without PANZER. One keystroke and a tank materialised out of thin air right in front of you. I cannot count how many evenings I lost spawning tank after tank, lining them up along Washington Beach like a one-man invasion force. Even better, pair it with FIGHTFIGHTFIGHT and watch the entire city descend into glorious anarchy whilst you watch from the safety of your armoured beast.
The vehicle cheats deserve a mention too. GETTHEREFAST handed you the iconic Infernus, the fastest car in the game and my personal favourite for tearing down the West Bridge at impossible speeds. TRAVELINSTYLE, THELASTRIDE and ROCKANDROLLCAR each spawned their own quirky rides, letting you cruise the neon strip in style.
