The glitter, the sequins, the dramatic lifts — Dancing with the Stars returned for its milestone 30th season in September 2021, and audiences across Asia were watching with particular delight. Broadcast on ABC and hosted by Tyra Banks, the season featured a fifteen-strong celebrity line-up judged by Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough. For many families gathered around the television from Singapore to Seoul, this cast felt like one of the most diverse and meaningful in the show's long history.

A Proud Moment for Asian Representation

Season 30 truly shone a spotlight on Asian talent. Olympic gymnastics champion Suni Lee, the Hmong-American gold medallist from the Tokyo Games, joined forces with professional dancer Sasha Farber and waltzed her way into the finale with admirable poise. Christine Chiu, the glamorous star of Netflix's Bling Empire, brought Hollywood-meets-Hong-Kong elegance to the ballroom alongside Pasha Pashkov. Meanwhile, head judge Carrie Ann Inaba, herself of Japanese and Chinese descent, continued to lend her discerning eye to the panel — a quiet source of inspiration for aspiring dancers throughout the region.

The Full Season 30 Cast Line-Up

The cast was nothing short of spectacular. Pop sensation JoJo Siwa made history in the first same-sex pairing with Jenna Johnson, whilst Peloton instructor Cody Rigsby overcame a COVID-19 scare to dance on with Cheryl Burke. The line-up also featured Amanda Kloots of The Talk, former Bachelor Matt James with Lindsay Arnold, actress Melora Hardin, country singer Jimmie Allen, WWE-turned-Hollywood star Mike "The Miz" Mizanin, Brian Austin Green with Sharna Burgess, Spice Girl Mel C, supermodel Beverly Johnson, Olivia Jade, reality personality Kenya Moore, and Cobra Kai actor Martin Kove, the eldest competitor of the season.

From Court to Ballroom: Iman Shumpert Claims the Mirrorball

In a stunning finale, NBA champion Iman Shumpert and his partner Daniella Karagach lifted the coveted Mirrorball Trophy, becoming the first basketball player ever to win the competition. JoJo Siwa finished as runner-up, with Amanda Kloots close behind in third place — a finale that kept viewers on the edge of their seats right until the very last moment.

Keeping the Rhythm Alive at Home

The joy of dance, of course, begins long before the ballroom. This charming 2004 Wiggles Wiggling Dancing Guitar from Spin Master is a lovely reminder of how music and movement captivate us from childhood. Just as Season 30 inspired youngsters across Asia to twirl in their living rooms, nostalgic toys like this retired classic show that the love of wiggling, grooving and performing is truly passed down through the generations.

Whether you tuned in for the breathtaking contemporary routines or the heartfelt personal journeys, Season 30 proved once and for all that dance is a universal language — one that speaks beautifully to audiences of every background, age and corner of the world.
