I'll be honest with you — out of every handheld game I've ever sunk hours into, nothing quite hits the nostalgia button like GTA Vice City Stories on the PSP. I picked up my copy of the Europe version way back when the PSP was the coolest thing you could pull out of your school bag, and to this day I reckon it's one of the best portable experiences Rockstar ever put together. Recently I dug out my old UMD, made myself a backup ISO of the Europe version, and lost an entire weekend replaying Vic Vance's rise through the criminal underbelly of 1984 Vice City. It was glorious.

Why the Europe Version of Vice City Stories Still Holds Up on PSP

There's something special about the Europe release of Vice City Stories. The PAL version came in that chunky PSP box with the PEGI 18 rating splashed across the front, and it launched around November 2006 here in Australia, not long after the European drop. One thing I've always appreciated is that the PSP was region-free, so whether you had the European disc or a local copy, everything just worked. The game itself runs beautifully — Rockstar managed to squeeze an entire 3D GTA world onto a handheld without it feeling like a compromise, which was borderline witchcraft at the time.

What Makes Vic Vance's Story So Memorable

Unlike most GTA protagonists, Vic Vance is actually a decent bloke. He's a soldier trying to look after his family who gets dragged into the criminal life bit by bit, and you genuinely root for the guy. Set two years before the events of Vice City, the story follows Vic and his scheming brother Lance Vance — yes, that Lance Vance — as they build an empire from nothing. The empire-building mechanic was new for the series too. You could take over businesses across the city, upgrade them, and watch your cash flow grow. I must have spent more time managing my rackets than actually doing the main story missions, if I'm being honest with myself.

The Little Things That Made the PSP Version Shine

Vice City Stories was the first GTA where you could swim, which sounds trivial now but felt revolutionary back then. No more drowning the second you fell off a jet ski! Speaking of which, bombing around the canals on a jet ski with Wave 103 pumping out eighties synth-pop through my headphones is a core memory. The radio stations are packed with period-perfect tracks, and the satire on VCPR still makes me chuckle.

Playing the ISO Version Today

These days, most folks who hunt down a Vice City Stories ISO are doing it to play on their phone or PC with an emulator, and fair enough — the game holds up remarkably well at upscaled resolutions. My advice is always the same: if you still own the original UMD, ripping your own disc to ISO is a brilliant way to preserve it, because those little discs scratch far too easily. The Europe version is the one I'd recommend tracking down for collectors, purely for the box art alone.

If you've never played Vice City Stories, do yourself a favour and fix that. It's a proper gem of the PSP era, and revisiting it reminded me exactly why so many of us still rave about it nearly two decades later. Fire it up, cruise past the neon-lit strip at sunset, and tell me that isn't one of the finest moments in handheld gaming history.
