I've got a soft spot for GTA Vice City Stories, and I make no apologies for it. Released on the PSP back in 2006 before landing on the PS2 a year later, it was the last of the great handheld-era spin-offs from Rockstar, and it captured that neon-soaked 1984 version of Vice City in a way that still makes me nostalgic. But having sunk countless hours into both versions over the years, I've developed some pretty firm opinions on which one deserves your time – and honestly, the answer isn't as straightforward as you might expect.
Let's start with the obvious: the PSP version came first, and for a handheld game of its era, it was nothing short of astonishing. Squeezing an entire open-world city onto a portable device felt like witchcraft at the time. Vic Vance's rise from broke soldier to empire-building kingpin played out beautifully on that gorgeous widescreen display, and I remember showing it off to mates who simply couldn't believe what the little console was capable of. That said, the PSP hardware did have its compromises. The draw distance was noticeably shorter, the frame rate wobbled during chaotic shootouts, and the lack of a second analogue stick made aiming feel clunky until you adapted to it.
Navigation is where my frustrations with the PSP version really surfaced. Learning the layout of Vice City, from the beaches of Ocean Beach to the docks at the far end of the map, took real patience when the controls fought against you. On the PS2, everything clicked into place. The DualShock's dual analogue sticks transformed combat into something genuinely smooth, letting me line up drive-by shots with precision I could only dream about on the handheld. The PS2 port also boasted crisper textures, longer draw distances and far quicker loading times, making the whole experience feel less like a compromise and more like a proper console release.
Yet here's the thing – the PS2 port quietly dropped one of the PSP version's best features: the ad-hoc multiplayer modes. Racing mates around the streets wirelessly on two PSPs remains one of my favourite gaming memories, and its absence on PS2 always stung a little. There was also something magical about causing chaos on the bus during a long commute, something a home console simply couldn't replicate. The empire-building mechanic, where you took over businesses across the city and defended them from rival gangs, worked brilliantly in bite-sized handheld sessions.
So which version wins? If I'm being honest with myself, it depends on my mood. The PS2 version is objectively the better game – smoother, prettier, more comfortable to control. But the PSP original has the charm, the novelty and the multiplayer memories that keep me coming back. If you can only pick one, go for the PS2 for the superior experience. But if you ever spot a PSP copy going cheap, grab it anyway. Some games are worth owning twice.
