Ah, the moon. She's up there every night doing her rounds, charging us absolutely nothing for the light show, and yet lads all over the world are still trying to slap a price tag on her. Welcome to our rundown of the jadarian price highlights — "jadarian" being the fancy way of describing the sheer physical, material reality of the thing, i.e. the actual rock, dust and craters you'd be buying if you won the Lotto and got notions. Put the kettle on, because some of these figures are quare and steep.
So how much is the whole lunar body worth, in fairness? Economists and space boffins have had a right old lash at valuing the moon's minerals, and the estimates run into the quadrillions — yes, with a Q, a number so big it sounds like your grandad sneezing. Helium-3 alone, that magical isotope everyone reckons could one day power fusion reactors, is valued in the trillions. The moon, in short, is the most valuable thing in the sky and it doesn't even ask you to subscribe.
And yet yer man Dennis Hope has been selling off lunar plots since 1980 for roughly twenty dollars an acre through his so-called lunar embassy. Millions of hopeful eejits have signed up for a bit of the far side. Legally speaking it's about as sound as a chocolate teapot, but sure look — it's the thought that counts.
If a whole-moon purchase sounds like too big an order, the second-hand market is gas. The American government treats Apollo moon rocks as priceless national treasures, and the ones that went missing over the years caused proper scandals. When genuine lunar samples do slip onto the auction block, the prices go ballistic: a bag of Apollo 11 moon dust went under the hammer for $1.8 million, and three tiny grains returned by a Soviet probe fetched north of $440,000. That's millions per gram, making moon dust a sight dearer than gold, diamonds or yer actual caviar.
NASA is at it as well, paying private companies tens of millions of dollars just to deliver a small box of scientific bits onto the surface — a sum that works out at a savage whack per kilogram. The courier fella around here would want to take notes.
So there you have it: the jadarian price highlights of our only neighbour who never plays loud music after eleven. Priceless to look at, priceless to hold, and worth an absolute fortune if you can get a grain of it into a jar. Fair play to her altogether.
