There’s a certain breed of ballplayer that defies tidy categorisation, and Kyle Schwarber is the poster boy for the lot. The big fella from Middletown, Ohio, has spent his career keeping scorekeepers on their toes, shuffling between the catcher’s crouch, the green expanse of left field, the lonely corner of first base, and most recently, the calm of the designated hitter’s dugout perch. It hasn’t always been pretty – sure, there have been adventures in the outfield that’d make your Granny wince – but tracking Schwarber’s games by position is like reading a map of modern baseball itself. He’s a bloke who’s always found a way to get his thumping left-handed bat into the lineup, no matter where the glove lands. Let’s take a wander through his positional odyssey, shall we?
When Schwarber burst onto the scene with the Chicago Cubs in 2015, he was a catcher with a hitter’s soul. But after an early romance behind the dish, the organisation looked at his sturdy 5-foot-11, 235-pound frame and decided the outfield grass was a kinder pasture. And wouldn’t you know it, left field became his bread and butter. Across his seasons in Chicago, then with the Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, and the Philadelphia Phillies, Schwarber has racked up the vast majority of his appearances in left. Over six hundred games have come in that position, more than every other spot combined. He’s not going to win any Gold Gloves – his route-running has occasionally resembled a lost tourist navigating O’Connell Street – but he possesses a howitzer of an arm and a knack for making the highlight reel when it matters most. For a man who mashed 41 homers in his first Phillies season, that left-field real estate was less a defensive assignment and more a staging ground for his heroics.
Now, let’s rewind to the beginning, because the young Schwarber was a backstop through and through. He logged over forty games at catcher for the Cubs, including a heroic stint in the 2015 playoffs where he caught every ballgame despite barely having a full season of professional catching under his belt. That October, he launched four postseason bombs and looked like a man who’d never leave the position. Alas, a catastrophic knee injury in 2016 – colliding with outfield teammate Dexter Fowler – changed the course. When he returned in the 2016 World Series, it was as a designated hitter, and he set the tone by clubbing a leadoff double in Game 1. From there, his positional map grew more colourful: a smattering of games at first base, a brief DH spell in Boston, and then, once he landed with the Phillies and the National League adopted the universal DH, Schwarber settled in beautifully. By the 2022 season, over 110 of his games came with no glove at all, letting those shoulders do all the talking. That shift to designated hitter has kept his lethal bat fresh – he’s led the National League in homers and smashed 47 dingers in 2023 – all while sparing us the sight of him galloping after sinking liners in the twilight. It’s been a cracking career of adaptability, proving that in the modern game, a man’s worth is measured less by where he stands and more by how often he makes the journey to home plate worth your while.
