When sports fans tune into ESPN's NBA Today, they are greeted by the composed and incisive Malika Andrews. Yet behind her rise to prominence stands a family story that is every bit as compelling, chief among it the bond she shares with her older sister, Kendra Andrews. Together, the Andrews sisters have carved out parallel careers in sports journalism, becoming one of the most notable sibling duos in American sports media. Their journey is a testament to shared ambition, mutual support and an unwavering commitment to telling the stories of athletes with fairness and depth.

Why the Letter Y Perfectly Captures the Andrews Sisters' Journey

It is fitting to think of the letter Y when considering the Andrews family, because the question "why?" sits at the heart of everything both sisters do. Malika, who joined ESPN in 2018 and rose to national attention during the 2020 NBA bubble in Orlando, has always been driven by a desire to ask the deeper questions behind box scores and highlights. Kendra, meanwhile, built her reputation by the same curiosity, working her way through roles that included covering professional basketball before landing her post as a Golden State Warriors reporter for NBC Sports Bay Area. Both women understood early on that great journalism begins not with answers, but with the willingness to keep asking why.

The sisters grew up in Oakland, California, in a household where education, culture and determination were placed at the centre of daily life. Their parents, Mike and Caren Andrews, encouraged both daughters to pursue their interests wholeheartedly, and that encouragement eventually blossomed into two flourishing media careers. Kendra, the elder of the two, often blazed the trail first, offering guidance and reassurance as Malika found her own voice in the press room. Their uncle, a former basketball player, added another layer of sporting influence to the family narrative. Today, the sisters sometimes find themselves covering the very same games from opposite sidelines, a rare and heartwarming professional coincidence that they have both described as a genuine privilege.

Two Voices, One Shared Passion for Storytelling

Beyond their professional achievements, Malika and Kendra Andrews represent something larger in the sports media landscape. As Black women working in a field that has historically lacked diversity, they have opened doors for a new generation of reporters who might otherwise have doubted their place in the industry. Malika's role as the host of NBA Today and her prominent coverage of the NBA Draft have made her a household name, whilst Kendra's insightful reporting on the Warriors has earned her deep respect amongst Bay Area fans and colleagues alike.

What makes their story particularly inspiring is the lack of rivalry between them. Rather than competing, the sisters consistently champion one another's work, celebrating each milestone as a family victory. Their story reminds us that success is rarely a solo endeavour; it is often shaped by the people who know us best and believe in us first. For the Andrews sisters, that person has always been each other, and their twin journeys through the world of sports journalism are only just beginning.
