Mel Gibson has never been a director content to linger in the light. His latest venture, Flight Risk, plunges audiences into a claustrophobic fever dream of paranoia and dread, where the cramped cabin of a small aircraft becomes a tomb in the sky. Mark Wahlberg stars as a grease-haired, unsettling pilot whose grin curdles the blood, whilst Michelle Dockery plays a deputy marshal escorting a witness — a man who knows too much and trusts no one. It is a film soaked in menace, a slow suffocation at ten thousand feet, and it confirms that Gibson remains fascinated by violence, betrayal, and the rot that festers beneath ordinary faces.
There is something almost spectral about the way the film opens — the hush before turbulence, the stillness of an Alaskan wilderness swallowing everything whole. Much like a small creature standing alone in an empty frame, the passengers aboard that aircraft are utterly exposed, cut off from the world, their fates hanging on the whims of a man whose intentions curdle with every passing mile. Gibson directs with a predator's patience. He lets the silence stretch until it becomes unbearable, until every creak of the fuselage feels like a death knell. The darkness here is not loud; it whispers.
Fear, in Gibson's hands, is a creature that watches and waits. Wahlberg's hitman-in-disguise embodies it — polished, patient, and utterly hollow-eyed. The director has always understood that the most chilling monsters are those who smile, and Flight Risk milks that truism until the audience's nerves lie raw. Dockery fights not merely for survival but for her soul, her dignity eroded mile by mile as the truth about her charge unravels like wet thread. The film does not offer redemption; it offers endurance, and little else.
In the end, Flight Risk is a bleak little machine of a thriller — lean, merciless, and unashamedly grim. It will not comfort you. It will trap you in that aluminium coffin, stare into you with cold eyes, and dare you to look away. Gibson, ever the architect of suffering on screen, would surely accept nothing less.
