Whenever I think back to the 2017 Michigan Wolverines, I find myself filled with a curious mix of pride and frustration. It was Jim Harbaugh's third season in Ann Arbor, and after two strong campaigns, expectations were sky-high. I remember poring over the roster that autumn, convinced this was a team bursting with future NFL talent. In many ways it was — the names on that list still make me shake my head in admiration — yet the season itself finished a rather disappointing 8-5, capped by an Outback Bowl loss to South Carolina. For me, the 2017 roster remains one of the most fascinating collections of individual brilliance I've ever watched fail to fully gel as a unit.
Let's be honest: defence was where this team lived and breathed. Rashan Gary, the former number one overall recruit, anchored the defensive line alongside the magnificent Maurice Hurst, who I firmly believe was the most underrated player in the entire country that year. Then there was the linebacker corps, featuring a ferocious Devin Bush Jr. whose hits I could practically feel from my sofa, and the versatile Khaleke Hudson roaming as the viper. Chase Winovich brought relentless energy off the edge, while the cornerback pairing of Lavert Hill and David Long locked down receivers week after week. When I look at that defensive depth chart now, it reads like an NFL draft board, and frankly, that's exactly what it became.
The other side of the ball tells a more bittersweet story, in my opinion. Wilton Speight began the season under centre before injury intervened, handing the reins to Brandon Peters and, briefly, to John O'Korn. The youth movement was real: receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones, Tarik Black and Nico Collins were all true freshmen, and I vividly recall the excitement each time one of them hauled in a catch. Karan Higdon and Chris Evans formed a genuinely exciting rushing tandem, running behind an line anchored by veterans Mason Cole and Ben Bredeson. It was an offence brimming with potential that simply needed time to mature. Looking back, I realise the 2017 roster was less about that season's results and more about laying foundations — many of these youngsters blossomed into stars, and being able to say I watched them from the very beginning is something I'll always treasure as a Michigan supporter.
