I'll be honest with you: when Florida State hired Mike Norvell back in December 2019, I wasn't entirely sure what to make of it. The man had done a decent job at Memphis, sure, but this was FSU — a programme dripping in history, national titles and Heisman trophies. After the Willie Taggart era went pear-shaped, us fans were desperate for someone to restore the shine. What followed has been an absolute rollercoaster, and I want to walk you through Norvell's record at FSU season by season.

The early days were grim, no point pretending otherwise. The COVID-hit 2020 campaign finished 3-6, and while everyone was quick to make allowances, 2021's 5-7 finish tested the patience of even the most loyal supporters. I'll admit I had my doubts. There were murmurs about whether Norvell was the right man for Tallahassee, and honestly, they weren't entirely daft murmurs either.

The Turning Point in Tallahassee

Then came 2022, and sure, didn't everything change? A 10-3 season capped with a Cheez-It Bowl victory over Oklahoma felt like fresh life breathing into the programme — a bit like spotting the first tulips of spring after a long, dreary winter. Suddenly the belief was back amongst the fans, the swagger returned, and Norvell's reputation began its proper recovery.

2023 was the high-water mark, and what a season it was. The Seminoles went 13-1, battering Louisville in the ACC Championship Game, and had it not been for one of the most controversial playoff snubs in college football history, we might well have been talking about a national title run. That 63-3 Orange Bowl defeat to Georgia stung badly — it was gutting to watch, truth be told — but it doesn't erase what that team achieved. Fourteen wins and a conference crown is grand by any measure.

When It All Fell Apart

And then 2024 happened. Two wins and ten losses. I still can't quite believe I'm typing that. A programme that had gone unbeaten through the regular season the year before collapsed spectacularly, injuries ravaged the roster, and the pressure on Norvell ratcheted up enormously heading into 2025. That's the thing about college football: it can turn on you fierce quick.

So where does that leave his overall record? Through the 2024 season, Norvell stood at roughly 33-27 at FSU, with a 1-1 mark in bowl games. It's a peculiar record all the same — brilliant highs, dreadful lows, and not an awful lot in between. My own view is that the jury is still out. There's genuine coaching ability there, no question, and the recruiting has shown flashes of promise, but consistency has been woefully absent. Whether Norvell ends up as the man who restored Florida State to glory or another awkward chapter in a difficult decade, only time will tell. Sure look, that's sport for you — and I wouldn't have it any other way.
