There are certain places that just get you, you know? For me, Mr Taco is one of them. Tucked away on a sleepy corner of my neighbourhood, this unassuming little Mexican joint has become my second kitchen, my Friday night ritual, and honestly, the reason I get out of bed on chilly mornings. I first wandered in about two years ago, chasing the smell of charred meat and fresh coriander drifting down the street, and I have never really recovered. In the best possible way, mind you.
I wish I could tell you there was a grand plan behind my first visit, but the truth is far less glamorous. I was starving after a long day, too lazy to cook, and Mr Taco was the closest thing with a lit sign. One carne asada taco later, I was hooked. The tortillas are pressed fresh, the salsas have actual personality, and the bloke behind the counter remembered my order by my third visit. That sort of thing matters to a creature of habit like me.
I will admit something a bit odd: I am one of those people who loves maps. I have spent entire evenings at Mr Taco with a map spread out next my burrito, daydreaming about far-flung corners of the world while working my way through a plate of tacos al pastor. There is something deeply satisfying about tracing borders and coastlines while flavours explode in your mouth. Some people meditate; I eat tacos and plan imaginary expeditions across continents I may never see. Each to their own, I reckon.
Let's talk logistics, because you will need guidance. The carnitas tacos are non-negotiable — slow-cooked, crispy at the edges, and generous with the pickled onion. The elote, that glorious Mexican street corn slathered in mayo, cotija and chilli, is the side dish I judge all other side dishes against. And if they have horchata on the go, order two. Trust me on this one. I once made the mistake of ordering one, finished it in about four seconds, and had to sheepishly shuffle back up to the counter for another.
My partner reckons I treat every road trip like a military operation, and honestly, she is not wrong. I am the sort of person who studies roads and railway lines the night before a drive, working out where we will stop and, more importantly, where we will eat. Nine times out of ten, the answer is Mr Taco before we hit the highway, and a stash of their house-made hot sauce sachets in the glovebox for the trip. It is not sophisticated, but it is a system that works.
At the end of the day, Mr Taco is not fancy dining, and that is precisely the point. It is honest food made by people who clearly care, served in a room full of happy noise and the smell of lime and smoke. Whether you are a taco purist or a burrito maximalist, do yourself a favour and get down there. Bring your appetite, bring your mates, and maybe bring a map if you are strange like me. You will leave fuller, happier, and already planning your next visit. I know I always am.
