Few things capture the sun-soaked, crime-fuelled charm of the mid-1980s quite like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. Originally released for the PlayStation Portable, this cult classic runs beautifully on the PPSSPP emulator, letting players revisit Vice City on their phones, tablets and PCs. And whilst the campaign is tremendous fun on its own, cheat codes elevate the experience into pure, unfiltered mayhem. Whether you fancy an arsenal of heavy weaponry, a garage full of stolen supercars or simply want to wander the streets untouched by the police, this guide has you covered.
On the original PSP, cheats were typed in mid-game using the handheld's buttons. On PPSSPP, the principle is exactly the same — you simply need your controls mapped sensibly. Open Settings, head to Controls, and bind the D-pad, face buttons and both shoulder triggers (L and R) to keys you can hit quickly, or use the on-screen touch controls. Once you are in the game, pause only to check the sequence, then punch in the code during gameplay. A small on-screen confirmation will appear in the corner when a cheat registers successfully.
If you only memorise a handful of codes, make them these PSP classics, entered during gameplay:
Full Health: Up, Circle, Circle, Down, Left, Circle, Circle, Right, Square. Armour: the same sequence, but finish with Triangle instead of Square. Extra cash: finish with X. For firepower, the three weapon sets use the pattern Up, Circle, Triangle, Triangle, Down, Left, then Circle, Square or X depending on the pack you want. To wipe your wanted level entirely, try Up, Right, Right, L, R, Down, R, R, and if you would rather raise hell instead, the wanted level up and down cheats use similar triangle and square variations.
Half the joy of Vice City Stories is tearing down Ocean Beach at ridiculous speeds, and there are cheats to make that easier. The PCJ-600 superbike can be summoned with Left, Left, Down, Down, Up, Up, X, X, L, R, whilst the beloved Cheetah sports car appears after entering Up, L, Down, R, Left, L, Right, R. Combine these with the weather cheats — cycling between clear skies, sunshine and fog with simple up-down-circle sequences — and you can stage your own neon-lit drive through the rain-slicked streets.
If button sequences feel fiddly on a keyboard, PPSSPP supports CWCheat codes natively. Enable cheats under Settings, then System, and toggle "Enable Cheats". Place a CWCheat database file in the PSP/Cheats folder of your memory stick directory, making sure it matches your game ID — ULUS-10164 for the North American release of Vice City Stories. Alternatively, open the pause menu in-game, select Cheats, and add codes manually in the standard _L format. It takes a few minutes to set up, but afterwards every cheat becomes a simple toggle.
Cheats are brilliant fun, but they come with caveats. Activating them can block achievements or trophies, and saving with cheats enabled has been known to cause odd behaviour in the PS2 and PSP titles, so keep a clean save file before experimenting. Cheaper vehicle handling and chaos mode can also destabilise missions, so save often and liberally. Used sensibly, though, cheats are the perfect way to squeeze hundreds of extra hours out of this PSP gem. Fire up PPSSPP, drop into Vice City, and go cause some gloriously irresponsible trouble.
