Seth Meyers Brothers

I have always been fascinated by families where more than one person ends up in comedy, and the Meyers family is a perfect example of that rare phenomenon. Whenever I watch Seth Meyers deliver his razor-sharp monologues on Late Night, I find myself wondering what it must have been like growing up in the Meyers household. As it turns out, Seth is not the only funny one in the family. He has a younger brother, Josh Meyers, who carved out his own impressive career in comedy and acting, and the more I read about the pair, the more charmed I become by their story.

Seth Adam Meyers was born in 1973 in Evanston, Illinois, but the family soon moved to Okemos, Michigan, where he and his younger brother Josh spent most of their childhood. Their mother, Hilary, was a French teacher, and their father, Laurence, worked in finance, so comedy was not exactly the family trade. Yet somehow both boys caught the performing bug. I love imagining those two brothers entertaining each other at the dinner table, unknowingly rehearsing for careers that would eventually put them both in front of millions of people. Josh followed Seth to Northwestern University as well, which tells you everything about how close the brothers were, sharing not just a home but a university and eventually an industry.

What strikes me most about Josh Meyers is that he never simply rode on his brother's coattails. He joined the cast of Mad TV in 2001 and became known for his uncanny impressions and fearless sketch work. From there he landed the role of Randy Pearson in the final season of That '70s Show, stepping into a cast that had already become a cultural institution, which cannot have been easy. He has since appeared in films, lent his voice to animated projects, and continued performing stand-up and sketch comedy. Watching clips of the two brothers together, I am always struck by how their comedic sensibilities rhyme even though their styles are distinct. Seth is the precise, measured writer; Josh is the elastic, chameleonic performer. It makes me think about my own siblings and how the same household can produce such different flavours of talent.

In the end, the story of Seth and Josh Meyers reminds me that behind many great comedians stands a sibling who made them laugh first. The brothers have appeared together over the years, and their easy chemistry is evident whenever they share a stage or an interview. For me, that is the real magic of the Meyers family: proof that the best comedy often begins at home, long before the cameras start rolling.
