I first watched Tombstone on a stinking hot January arvo years ago, the kind of day where you retreat inside, crank the fan and let the telly do the entertaining. I went in expecting a solid Western with Kurt Russell doing his thing as Wyatt Earp. What I got instead was a masterclass from Val Kilmer, whose Doc Holliday remains, in my honest opinion, one of the greatest supporting performances ever committed to film. It is the reason the movie has stuck with me long after the credits rolled.
Every time I revisit Tombstone, I find myself watching Kilmer rather than the plot. His Doc Holliday is a dying man — sharp-tongued, southern-genteel, and quietly terrified of the consumption eating him alive. Yet he delivers every line with this languid, lethal charm that just commands the screen. When he drawls "I'm your huckleberry", it lands like a thunderclap. It is not just the words; it is the diction, the half-lidded eyes, the way he can flip from courtly politeness to cold menace in a heartbeat. Russell is fine as the steady centre of the film, but Kilmer is the bloke you cannot look away from, and everyone who has seen the film seems to agree.
What gets me is how much craft went into a role that could have been pure caricature. Kilmer reportedly researched Holliday obsessively, nailing the accent, the card-sharp mannerisms and the tragic wit of a real-life gambler staring down an early grave. That commitment shows in every scene, whether he is trading insults at cards or standing beside Earp at the O.K. Corral.
The funny thing about Tombstone is that it keeps getting rediscovered. My nephew, who has never voluntarily watched a Western in his life, quoted "Say when" to me over a barbie last summer, and I nearly dropped my snags. That is the mark of a film with genuine staying power: it crosses generations, genres and even casual streaming browsing to land in front of people who were not even born when it premiered in 1993.
When news broke of Kilmer's passing in 2025, I reckon half the tributes online led with Doc Holliday rather than Batman or Top Gun's Iceman. That says everything. The man built a career full of memorable characters, but Tombstone gave him a role that fans treat with genuine reverence. Convention halls still erupt when his co-stars recreate scenes, and the film's anniversary screenings sell out across Australia and abroad.
For me, the beauty of Kilmer's Doc is the mix of humour and heartbreak. He plays a man losing everything with total grace and impeccable manners, and somehow makes you laugh while your chest tightens. Few actors could balance those tones so effortlessly. If you have not watched Tombstone lately, do yourself a favour this weekend. Pour something decent, settle in, and watch a true great remind you what screen presence actually means. I'm your huckleberry, indeed.
